When a container event releases payment: Forwarding PRO × Digital Safe

When a container is lifted onto a vessel at Yokohama, an EDI message fires somewhere inside the carrier’s system. Most trade software treats that message as a notification — something to surface on a dashboard. We treat it as a settlement trigger.

That’s the difference between tracking logistics and operationalizing them.

The gap between logistics events and payment events

For most importers and exporters, the logistics side of a trade and the payment side of a trade live in different worlds. The forwarder posts updates to a portal. The treasury team chases the wire by email. Reconciliation happens later, manually, sometimes weeks after the goods have moved.

This gap is not just inefficient — it’s expensive. Suppliers absorb cash-flow drag because payment lags physical delivery. Buyers absorb risk because they pay before they can verify. Everyone in the middle absorbs operational overhead translating one set of events into another.

What Forwarding PRO actually does

Forwarding PRO is the operational layer for forwarders, trading houses, and shippers. Three things happen inside it:

  1. Instant, multi-partner quoting. Rates from your forwarder network resolve in seconds, not days. The quote engine handles complex tariff structures, surcharges, and route variants — the kind of work that usually means an Excel sheet and an apology.
  2. Centralized case management. One ticket per shipment. Shippers, forwarders, customs brokers, and trading houses all see and update the same record. No “where’s the BL” email chains.
  3. Milestone capture. Each event in a shipment’s life — booking confirmed, container loaded, vessel departed, port-of-discharge arrival, customs cleared — becomes a structured data point. Verifiable. Timestamped. Replayable.

That last one is what makes the connection to settlement possible.

How a milestone becomes a release

Inside Digital Safe — Standage’s on-chain escrow — release conditions are defined when the trade is structured. Conditions can include:

  • Document set complete (eBL issued, invoice accepted)
  • Container-on-vessel event from a specific port
  • Port-of-discharge arrival confirmation
  • Customs clearance event
  • Quality inspection sign-off

When Forwarding PRO captures a milestone that satisfies a condition, the relevant installment is released from Digital Safe. Stablecoin moves to the supplier. The buyer’s accounting system gets a structured reconciliation entry. No one had to chase anyone.

The physical world and the financial world stop being two different conversations. A container moving and a payment moving become the same event, recorded twice.

What this means in practice

For a Japanese SME importing from Vietnam: the moment the container is lifted at Haiphong, 30% of the agreed price moves from Digital Safe to the supplier’s wallet. The supplier — who used to wait three weeks after the goods landed for the second wire — gets paid as goods leave. The buyer — who used to absorb the FX risk between PO and final wire — sees a transparent ledger of what was paid, when, and against what evidence.

For the forwarder, the milestone they were already capturing in their TMS now has economic weight. They are not just logging an event for the customer’s portal; they are triggering money. That elevates the role of the forwarder in the trade.

Why “connected” matters more than “integrated”

Plenty of trade software talks about “integration.” Usually that means an API exists and the two systems can pass messages. Forwarding PRO and Digital Safe are connected in a different sense: they share the same data model and the same view of which trades are in flight. A milestone in Forwarding PRO doesn’t need to be translated for Digital Safe. It is the same record, used by both.

That’s deliberate. Trade has too many seams already. We are not adding another one.

Forwarding PRO × Digital Safe

Forwarding PRO

Forwarding PRO

Digital Safe(STANDAGE
