When a container sits at a port racking up demurrage charges, everyone blames the obvious things: congestion, the carrier, a slow terminal. Almost no one names the real culprit.
The container usually isn’t stuck because of the ship. It’s stuck because of the paperwork.
Demurrage is a latency tax
Demurrage and detention (D&D) are the fees you pay when a container overstays — sitting at the terminal or held past its free days. They are not small. Nine major carriers alone collected roughly $12.9 billion in D&D between April 2020 and March 2023, and while rates ease when supply chains calm, they spike hard the moment anything slips. North American ports are the most punishing of all.
Here’s the part the industry treats as unavoidable: a container can’t be released until the right party presents the right original document — the Bill of Lading. If that B/L is a piece of paper being couriered across the world, or a PDF stuck in an approval queue, the cargo waits. Not because it can’t physically move — because the document can’t. Every day the paper is in transit is a day the meter runs.
That’s a latency tax. You’re not paying for storage you wanted. You’re paying for the gap between “the goods arrived” and “the document that releases them arrived.”
Close the document gap, shrink the bill
This is the least glamorous, most immediately measurable case for digital trade documents — and it lands straight on the SME’s P&L.
When the Bill of Lading is a digital-native, executable token, transfer of title is instant and verifiable — no courier, no “lost original,” no waiting on a physical surrender. The consignee can take release the moment they’re entitled to, not days later. And when the document transfer is coupled to settlement, the two events that gate release — payment and title — resolve together instead of chasing each other.
The carriers know this: they’ve committed to 100% electronic Bills of Lading by 2030 under DCSA standards. The document layer is going digital precisely because paper latency is a cost everyone can see in the invoice.
The number nobody itemizes
Ask most SME exporters what they lose to slow documents and you’ll get a shrug — because it never appears as a line called “document latency.” It appears as demurrage. As detention. As a rushed courier fee. As working capital tied up in cargo that arrived but couldn’t be collected. It’s a real, recurring cost, hidden inside charges that look like someone else’s fault.
Make the document move at the speed of a message, and a chunk of that cost simply stops occurring. Not through negotiation. Not through better congestion. By deleting the wait.
If your business eats demurrage and detention charges you suspect are really document-timing problems, that’s exactly the gap we build to close. Let’s look at your corridor.
