The money now moves in an hour. The title still travels on its own.

Abstract 3D render: a cyan ring of light on one hexagonal platform and a glowing gold glass slab on another, their two rails of light stopping just short of meeting

For a decade the complaint about cross-border payments was speed. Last week that complaint started to look out of date. On 30 September Lloyds Banking Group and Visa reported a pilot in which Lloyds settled $750,000 of payment obligations to Visa in stablecoins, from Jersey to the United States, with funds arriving in under an hour, weekends included. The same week, at Sibos in Miami, the industry’s biggest gathering spent four days on one word: interoperability.

The money now moves in an hour. The document that says who owns the goods still moves on its own. Lloyds, of all banks, shows both halves. It was the first UK bank to complete a transaction under the Electronic Trade Documents Act, on the day the law came into force in 2023. Three years on, the digital document and the digital money exist at the same bank. They have not yet met in the same step.

The money got fast.

The Lloyds and Visa pilot ran for seven days. Lloyds used its node on the Canton Network; Visa received on a public blockchain. Peter Left, Lloyds’ head of digital assets, framed it as making international payments faster, more transparent and more flexible for businesses. Visa’s UK and Ireland country manager, Rob Cameron, framed it as stablecoins working alongside existing banking infrastructure, not around it.

That is the tone of the whole season. At Sibos 2026 the conversation was no longer whether tokenised money works. Chainlink said it would let banks connect their own systems and signing keys to Swift’s blockchain ledger for 24/7 payments in tokenised deposits, with the money staying on each bank’s balance sheet. The headline session was titled “Beyond digital islands”. The banks have accepted that the money rail is built. The fight now is to connect the islands.

This is good news for every exporter. Money that settles on a Sunday in under an hour removes days of float and a layer of correspondent cost. We welcome it without reservation.

The title got legal.

The document side has its own milestones. On 20 September 2023, the day the UK’s Electronic Trade Documents Act took effect, Lloyds completed a transaction for the retailer Matalan: a digital promissory note, issued on Enigio’s trace:original, settling a documentary collection for garments. The key documents arrived two days earlier than paper would have. Since then J.P. Morgan has issued electronic bills of exchange under the same Act and, according to Forbes, extended them to the United States ahead of New York’s amended commercial code.

In Japan the Commercial Code amendment that gives an electronic bill of lading the same standing as paper is headed for this autumn’s Diet session. Once it passes, a Japanese exporter will be able to hold title to a cargo as a record that can be possessed, transferred and told apart from a copy, exactly like paper.

So the two hard problems of the last ten years, fast money and legal digital title, are both being solved. What is not being solved is the moment where they have to touch.

Two islands, one trade.

Read the Lloyds and Visa pilot again. It settled payment obligations between two large institutions that already trust each other. No document of title had to change hands for the money to move. That is the right first test, and it is exactly why it is not yet trade.

In a trade, the seller wants the money before giving up the goods, and the buyer wants the goods before giving up the money. For a century the answer has been to put a bank, a letter of credit or a courier in the middle and let someone carry the risk for the days in between. Make the money arrive in an hour and the title arrive in a day, separately, and you have shortened the gap without closing it. Someone still releases first. On open account, which carries most of world trade, that someone is usually the small seller, on trust.

Interoperability between money islands is necessary. It is not sufficient. The island that matters most to a trader is the one between the money and the document, and that one rarely appears on a conference agenda.

This is the layer we are building

We work at the point where the document of title and the money have to meet. Our Digital Safe holds the electronic trade document; Digitrad Payments carries the value; the release of one is the condition for the release of the other. Together with a tokenised-deposit platform and a bank, we are working on settling trades in a bank-issued deposit token that waits for the electronic bill of lading, for the small and mid-sized firms that trade on open account. We expect to share more before long. On the stablecoin side, our end-to-end run with BitTrade showed a cross-border payment received, converted and withdrawable as ordinary yen within the same business day.

We do not mind which rail the money takes. A deposit token where a bank needs to stay in the loop, a regulated stablecoin where a corridor needs reach. What we insist on is the coupling: title and payment as one event, so that neither side carries the other’s risk. Fast money and legal documents are the two ingredients. The atomic exchange of the two is the product, and it is where we expect the next wave of partnerships between banks, platforms and carriers to form.

The litmus test

Ask your bank one question: if your buyer’s payment and your electronic bill of lading arrived in the same minute, could your system release both in the same step, or would someone still have to go first?

If someone still goes first, the money got faster and the trade did not.

その後J.P.
