It’s the halfway point of 2026, the trade-tech conference circuit is in full swing, and every vendor on earth has rebranded around AI. So we thought we’d do something slightly reckless: grade the field. Honestly, with opinions, and at the risk of annoying people we like.
This is our scorecard for where trade technology actually is right now — what’s real, what’s noise, and what everyone’s still getting wrong. Marks out of a clean A–F. Disagree freely; that’s the point of a report card.
Electronic Bills of Lading & document interoperability — A−
The biggest genuine progress of the last year. In January 2026 the DCSA completed the first live cross-platform eBL transaction, and five platforms now interoperate under a shared standard with IG P&I approval — which means an eBL is no longer trapped in whatever silo issued it. With 17+ jurisdictions now recognising electronic trade documents under MLETR, and carriers committed to 100% eBL by 2030, the legal and technical foundations are basically in place.
Why not an A? Because adoption still lags capability badly, and far too much “digitisation” is still a PDF in a trench coat. The rails are ready; the traffic isn’t on them yet. Verdict: the foundation of the decade, held back only by inertia.
Regulated stablecoins & tokenised money — A
Our highest mark, and the one we’ll defend most aggressively. The US GENIUS Act (signed July 2025, in force January 2027) gave dollar stablecoins a real federal framework; the OCC handed national trust charters to Circle and Paxos in December 2025; MiCA and Japan’s Payment Services Act round out the supervised picture. This is “boring money” winning exactly as it should — regulated, redeemable, dull, and therefore usable by institutions that would never touch crypto.
Verdict: the quiet revolution. The headlines went to the law; the impact is in the corridors.
“DeFi trade finance” & unregulated crypto rails — D
Time to be blunt. The 2021-era pitch that decentralised, unregulated crypto would disintermediate trade finance has not survived contact with reality. Real exporters and real banks need redemption guarantees, sanctions screening, and someone accountable. The genuinely useful crypto idea — programmable, dollar-pegged value — got absorbed into the regulated stablecoin story above, which is the opposite of DeFi. Verdict: the good ideas graduated; what’s left is mostly yield-farming in a hi-vis vest.
AI in trade operations — B
The most over-claimed and under-delivered category — for now. Ninety percent of “AI for trade” in 2026 is a chatbot bolted onto an old product, or a “summarise this document” button. That’s theatre. The real prize is unsexy: AI as the orchestration layer that runs a multi-step trade — discovery, documents, compliance, freight, settlement — as one loop, encoding genuine trade expertise rather than generating text. Very few are actually building that; most are decorating.
We grade it a B because the ceiling is enormous and a handful of teams (we’d like to think ourselves among them) are building toward the real thing. Ask a hard question of anyone selling you “AI trade”: does it do the work, or just describe it? Verdict: huge if real, theatre if not — check which one you’re being sold.
Digital trade platforms & the “single window” — B
Government and consortium efforts (Japan’s TradeWaltz among them) and the broader single-window ambition are directionally right and slowly maturing. The problem is fragmentation: lots of windows, each single. Interoperability between platforms — the thing DCSA just proved possible for documents — is the unlock the platform layer still mostly lacks. Verdict: right idea, too many islands; the bridges are the work.
Tokenised deposits & CBDCs — B
Bank-issued digital money — Japan’s DCJPY and peers — is one of the most strategically important developments and one of the slowest. The promise is real: settlement at digital speed without leaving the regulated banking perimeter. The pace is bank-pace. Verdict: a sleeper. Boring on the surface, foundational underneath — watch this one.
The opinion underneath the grades
If there’s a single thesis in this scorecard, it’s this: in trade, the boring, regulated, interoperable things are beating the flashy, novel, standalone things — decisively. Regulated stablecoins beat DeFi. Interoperable eBLs beat clever single-platform portals. Orchestration AI beats chatbot AI. Tokenised deposits — the dullest money imaginable — may matter most of all.
And the second thesis, which is really a prediction: the winners will be the ones who unify, not the ones who point-solve. The value isn’t in having the best eBL, or the best payment rail, or the best AI in isolation. It’s in fusing them so a document event triggers a payment and a settlement constraint shapes a shipment — one loop, not six tools. The leading indicator to watch is the document-money coupling: the day an atomic swap runs routinely on real cargo is the day this whole scorecard gets re-graded upward.
That’s our read at the midpoint of 2026. We’re betting the company on the boring, unified, regulated side of every one of these calls — and we think the next twelve months prove it out. If you’d like to argue with any of these grades, or see what the unified version looks like for your trade, we’d genuinely enjoy the conversation.
