The Letter of Credit is a 400-year-old workaround. Most trades no longer need it.

The Letter of Credit is one of the most elegant instruments finance ever produced. A buyer and a seller who don’t know or trust each other, separated by an ocean and a legal system, can still trade — because a bank steps between them and guarantees that documents and money line up. It has worked for centuries.
It’s also a workaround. And for a large and growing class of trades, it’s a workaround we no longer need.
What an L/C actually is
Strip away the jargon and a Letter of Credit is a bank renting you its trust. The seller won’t ship without assurance of payment; the buyer won’t pay without assurance of shipment. Neither trusts the other, so both pay a third party — the bank — to stand in the middle, check the documents, and release funds when they match.
You’re paying for that trust three times over: in fees (issuance, advising, confirmation, amendments), in time (days of document examination, discrepancies bouncing back and forth), and in working capital locked up as collateral while it all resolves. For a mid-size SME, an L/C can quietly cost more than the margin on the deal.
The gap it bridges is now closeable directly
Here’s the shift. The L/C exists to solve exactly one problem: the document and the money can’t be trusted to change hands together, so a bank has to referee. That problem is no longer unsolvable.
When the Bill of Lading is a digital-native, executable token and the payment is regulated, programmable money, the two can be coupled in a single atomic swap — the document transfers to the buyer at the exact instant the money transfers to the seller, or neither moves. The referee’s entire job — making sure both legs line up — is done by the settlement itself.
Put plainly: you’ve been paying a bank to guarantee a handshake a smart contract can now enforce.
What this is not
This isn’t “L/Cs are dead.” For large deals, with established counterparties, currencies that settle in dollars anyway, and financing needs bundled in — the L/C remains rational, and banks remain essential. Trade finance doesn’t vanish; it moves up the value chain to where judgement actually matters.
What changes is the vast middle: the mid-size, cross-border trades where the L/C was never a good fit — where its cost exceeds the value it adds, and the SME uses it only because there was no cheaper way to bridge the trust gap. For those, the atomic swap isn’t a nicer L/C. It’s the removal of the reason the L/C existed.
Why it matters
Every workaround feels permanent until the constraint it worked around disappears. The L/C worked around the fact that documents and money moved on separate rails, reconciled by trusted intermediaries. Put them on one rail, and the workaround becomes optional — a choice, not a tax.
For the SMEs we build for, that’s the difference between trade finance being a cost of doing business and trade finance being something you reach for only when it genuinely adds value. If you’d like to work out which of your trades still need an L/C — and which don’t — that’s a 30-minute conversation.
