The CRM is the most quietly influential piece of software most companies own. It is the system of record — the place where a human types what they said, what they promised, and what they did. An entire generation of enterprise software was built on that pattern: a screen, a form, and a person paying by the seat to fill it in.
That pattern is now ending. Not because CRMs got worse, but because the assumption underneath them — a human operates the software — is the exact thing AI agents remove. And the market has started to price it in, hard.
The number that spooked enterprise software
In February 2026, roughly $285 billion was wiped off the SaaS index in a matter of weeks. The trigger wasn’t a single bad earnings call. It was a dawning realisation among buyers: if an agent does the work, you don’t need the seat. Klarna had already made the point brutally concrete — it cut around 700 roles with AI, and every vendor who had a per-seat licence attached to one of those people quietly lost the revenue.
Watch how fast the incumbents are scrambling to reprice. Salesforce has shipped three different pricing models for Agentforce in about eighteen months — $2 per conversation, then Flex Credits at $0.10 per action, then per-user licences again. That’s not a strategy; that’s a company feeling for the floor in the dark. The old unit — the seat — is dissolving, and nobody has a confident replacement yet.
Why the system of record breaks
Here’s the mechanism, stated plainly. A CRM’s core job was to capture what a human did, after they did it, so the organisation had a memory. The data was a by-product of human work, keyed in by hand.
When an agent does the work, that logic inverts. The agent doesn’t report its actions into a form afterwards — the actions are structured data the moment they happen. The record isn’t something a person types; it’s the exhaust of the work itself. So the thing you were buying — a place for people to enter and retrieve information — has no people entering information. You weren’t really paying for the database. You were paying for the data-entry labour, dressed up as a licence.
Software is shifting from a tool you operate to an outcome that happens. The CRM was the purest expression of the old model. That’s why it’s the clearest casualty of the new one.
The critical caveat everyone’s skipping
Now the part the “SaaS is dead” crowd tends to wave past. If the record becomes the by-product of an agent’s actions, then the record’s job gets more important, not less. It stops being a memory aid and becomes the audit trail — the evidence of what an autonomous system did on your behalf, what it was authorised to do, and where a human stepped in.
That is a much higher bar than a CRM ever had to clear. A salesperson mistyping a deal stage is an annoyance. An agent taking an unauthorised action with no legible trail is a liability — legal, financial, regulatory. So the software that survives won’t be the software that removed the human and the record. It’ll be the software that kept a trustworthy record precisely because the human is no longer in every loop. Less “system of record,” more system of accountable action.
What this means for trade — and for us
For the businesses we build for, this is not abstract. An SME running cross-border trade doesn’t juggle one system of record; it juggles several — CRM, ERP, a TMS for forwarding, a payments portal, a spreadsheet holding it all together. Each one is a screen someone has to operate, and the operating is the glue tax we’ve written about: the unpaid job of being the integration between tools.
The agentic shift is a chance to delete that tax rather than relocate it. Not five systems of record and a human stitching them, but one intelligent layer that acts by intent and writes an accountable trail as it goes — the interface becomes “sell this to a buyer in London and get paid safely,” and the record becomes the verifiable history of how that happened. But — and this is the whole point of the caveat above — that only works if the trail is trustworthy, which means the actions underneath have to run on verifiable rails, not on screenshots and good intentions.
So the CRM question turns out to be the trade question in disguise: when the software acts for you, can you prove what it did? If you’re rethinking your stack for the agentic era, that’s the conversation worth having.
