Every stablecoin demo ends at ‘transfer complete.’ A trade doesn’t.

A stream of loose glowing cyan particles sweeping across a dark reflective grid floor and condensing, on a single lit hexagonal platform, into one solid warm-gold ingot; scattered light on the left resolving into a single solid object on the right.

Every cross-border stablecoin demo I have watched ends on the same frame: two wallets, a transaction hash, a green “confirmed”. It is genuinely impressive, and it answers a question a trade never actually asked. A token moving is not a company getting paid. A company is paid when it holds local currency it can spend, with the confirmations its bank and its books require. That last stretch — receive, confirm, convert, withdraw — is the part nobody demos, because it is the part that is hard.

So we ran it, end to end, and we are publishing the result with our partner rather than around it. With BitTrade, a registered Japanese crypto-asset exchange, STANDAGE took a crypto-asset payment through the full operational flow a company would actually use: send, confirm receipt in Japan, sell and convert to yen, and arrive at a state where it can be withdrawn as ordinary Japanese yen. The question was never “can the token move.” It was “can a Japanese business get paid.”

Two findings, both in the right direction.

The first was speed. From confirming receipt to yen that could be withdrawn, the whole chain closed within hours — the same business day, not the three-to-five the correspondent-banking world has trained everyone to expect. The transfer itself was, as always, the fast part. What we were actually measuring was everything after it, and that is where the days normally hide.

The second was cost. Converting the crypto-asset into yen came in below the level we had budgeted for. And because some of those costs do not scale with the size of the transaction, the larger the trade, the smaller the share they represent. We ran this at a deliberately modest size, which means the economics improve, not worsen, as the ticket grows. The specific figures we are holding for the joint seminar on 15 September — the link is below — because a cost number deserves to be shown with its working, not dropped as a headline.

Why a single clean run changes who the rail is for.

Almost all of the recent progress in cross-border money sits on the sending side. The G20’s roadmap measures the speed, cost and transparency of the transfer. Japan’s new yen stablecoins improve the instrument. The banks’ tokenised-deposit networks improve settlement between banks. All real, all useful — and all upstream of the place a small exporter actually gets stuck.

For a mid-sized seller in Lagos or Jakarta, the binding constraint was never “can the money leave.” It was “will it arrive as usable money, this week, without the fees eating the margin.” Move that from days to hours, and from a guess to a measured and modest cost, and cross-border trade opens to precisely the companies the correspondent-banking system quietly prices out — the SME a bank finds too small to onboard and a corridor finds too marginal to serve. That is the market STANDAGE has always built for.

None of this is finished — and that is the point.

A single clean run is a proof, not a product. The questions that come next are the real ones: standardising and automating the flow so it does not depend on a good day; running it at genuine trade volumes; and doing it alongside the forwarders, banks, exchanges and document platforms that each touch a shipment end to end. Some of those conversations are already under way. We will keep publishing what we find — the parts that worked and the parts that did not — because a settlement rail is adopted when a finance director can see who is accountable at each step, not when a deck calls it inevitable.

The litmus test

The next time someone shows you a cross-border stablecoin demo, wait for “transfer complete”, then ask one question: how many hours, and how many yen in cost, until this is money my accountant can actually spend?

If the answer is “the transfer is instant”, they have answered a different question from the one your business is asking.

We will walk through the full result — costs included — with BitTrade on 15 September. Keen to compare notes with anyone working on the landing side.
