Risk-hedged installments: paying overseas suppliers without paying for problems

The problem with one-shot international payment. A Japanese SME wants to buy from a new overseas supplier — say, in Pakistan. The contract is for ¥25M of goods. The supplier wants payment up front, or close to it. The importer, reasonably, doesn’t want to wire ¥25M to a counterparty they don’t yet trust, in a currency that may move 3% against them before the container ships, on infrastructure (correspondent banking) that quietly takes another 1–2% and 3–5 days. If the goods arrive late, out of spec, or not at all, the importer has very little recourse and a long, expensive recovery process.
This is the dynamic that quietly blocks a lot of SME trade. Suppliers want certainty. Importers want optionality. SWIFT gives both sides delay and cost.
What changes when settlement is conditional
Standage acts as the trade broker — and crucially, as the importer of record in the international transaction. The Japanese SME deposits JPY with us. We convert to stablecoin via our BitTrade partnership (no SWIFT, no caps, same-day). The stablecoin sits in our Digital Safe — an on-chain escrow with release conditions attached.
The supplier no longer waits on a wire that may or may not arrive in three days. They see funds committed, escrowed, and scheduled to release in installments as agreed conditions are met. That is a very different conversation than “we will send the wire after we receive the goods.”
The risk doesn’t disappear — it gets positioned. Quality risk sits with quality inspection. FX risk is converted upfront. Counterparty risk sits with the escrow. The importer just sees: deposit, milestones, delivery.
How the installment schedule works
For the ¥25M example, a typical structure might look like:
- 30% on accepted purchase order and document set — verifiable invoices, packing lists, and the eBL (electronic Bill of Lading) issued. The supplier knows the deal is real.
- 30% on container-on-vessel — Forwarding PRO ingests the logistics event from a partner forwarder (Sankyu, Nishitetsu, Narasaki STAX). The goods are physically moving.
- 30% on arrival and customs clearance — port-of-discharge confirmation. The goods exist, in the right country.
- 10% on quality inspection clearance — third-party QC or buyer’s own check signs off. The goods are in spec.
Each release is automatic once its condition is verified. The supplier can plan around four predictable payments instead of guessing when a wire will land. The importer pays as goods arrive in spec — never for goods that don’t.
Why this only works now
Three things had to align: a regulated Japanese crypto exchange (BitTrade) willing to handle unlimited JPY ↔ stablecoin volume for institutional flows; on-chain escrow infrastructure that can hold real value against off-chain conditions; and trade-finance know-how to define the right conditions in the first place. The first two are technical. The third is judgment, and it’s where most of the work lives.
Where Standage fits in your stack
You don’t change your accounting. You don’t touch crypto. You don’t onboard your supplier to anything. You make one deposit in JPY to Standage, agree the milestones, and the rest happens in the background. We absorb the FX, hold the escrow, and act as importer of record. You get visibility into every release through your existing dashboard.
This is what we mean when we say operationalized. Not “borderless trade is now possible” — it always was. Risk-managed borderless trade for the 90% of SMEs that don’t have a treasury team. That’s new.
