Document, information, money – on one foundation: the Standage x DeCurret x Shoko Chukin alliance

In every international trade, three things have to travel from seller to buyer: the goods, the document of title that controls them, and the money. For all of modern history, the second and third have moved on separate, manual, mutually distrustful tracks — and the entire apparatus of trade finance exists to reconcile them after the fact.
We’ve been building toward something different, and it isn’t something any one company can do alone. It takes a trade platform, a bank-grade digital currency, and — critically — a bank whose whole reason for existing is to serve the small and mid-size businesses that feel the trust gap most. That’s the alliance we’re forming with DeCurret DCP and Shoko Chukin Bank.
Why these three, and not any three
The interesting thing about this collaboration is that none of the three parties is interchangeable. Each holds a piece the other two structurally cannot.
Standage brings the part the SME actually touches: the trade platform (our Trade Cloud), the user experience, and — the load-bearing piece — the Digital Safe that transfers the electronic Bill of Lading safely, preventing the misdelivery of title that paper B/Ls and naïve token transfers both risk.
DeCurret DCP brings DC JPY — a bank-issued tokenized deposit — and the shared infrastructure to coordinate a trade’s information across all parties. This is money that settles at digital speed without ever leaving the regulated banking system.
Shoko Chukin Bank brings the thing software can’t manufacture: a regulated bank’s trust, its compliance and screening capability, and a mandate. Shoko Chukin was created specifically to serve Japan’s small and medium enterprises and their cooperatives. An alliance about lowering the cost of trade for SMEs could not ask for a more fitting anchor.
Put those three together and you get something that has never quite existed: a way for the document, the trade information, and the money to be coordinated on one shared foundation — with the bank still inside its regulatory perimeter the entire time.
The problem this actually solves
Strip away the architecture diagrams and the problem is mundane, which is exactly why it’s worth solving. Today, even at a sophisticated bank, trade documents still arrive on paper. Thick bundles that don’t feed cleanly through a scanner. Compliance and sanctions checks performed, in many institutions, substantially by eye. Payment instructions chased by phone and internal workflow. Arrival notices printed and mailed.
None of this is anyone’s incompetence. It’s the residue of a world where trade documents were physical and the money lived in a separate system. The cost of that residue is borne disproportionately by SMEs — in time, in fees, and in the simple friction of getting a bank to process a trade that arrives as a stack of paper rather than as data.
The premise of this alliance is to fix the entry point. If the trade’s information and documents arrive as structured data from the start — through one trade platform — then screening can be faster, settlement can be coupled to the document rather than reconciled days later, and the SME experiences a single front door instead of a relay race between forwarder, bank, and counterparty.
What “coordinated settlement” looks like
The shape we’re working toward replaces two of the most common — and most painful — trade-settlement patterns:
- The advance-payment (TT) problem. Today a buyer often has to pay before the goods move, taking on the risk that they never arrive. A coordinated model lets funds be committed and held against defined conditions rather than simply sent into the dark.
- The document-against-payment (D/P) problem. Classic escrow against documents is slow and intermediary-heavy. Coupling the e-B/L transfer (via the Digital Safe) to a DC JPY settlement compresses that into something closer to a single coordinated event — the document moves to the buyer as the money moves to the seller.
Underneath, the principle is the one we keep returning to: the SME should never see the machinery. They operate from one platform. Whether the settlement leg runs over a regulated stablecoin or a bank-issued tokenized deposit is an implementation detail chosen per corridor — not a decision we push onto a busy exporter.
The bigger idea: single window, many banks
There’s a longer-range vision behind the immediate work, and it’s worth stating plainly because it’s the part that could genuinely reshape how SME trade is done.
Trade today forces a business to assemble its own patchwork: one system for documents, another relationship for shipping, a bank for payment, a separate tool for compliance. The vision here is a single window — one entry point for the SME — behind which multiple banks and multiple trade systems can interoperate. The exporter or importer files once; the document, the data, and the money coordinate behind the glass. We’re already advancing interoperability work on the document side; bringing a bank’s settlement directly into that picture is what turns it from a document tool into a genuine trade-settlement network.
That is a long road, and we are honest about where we are on it: this is early-stage, collaborative work — designing and validating before anything is declared finished. The three parties are deliberately moving in the careful sequence that an innovation involving a regulated bank, a digital currency, and live trade documents demands. We’ll share concrete results together, with our partners, when the work has earned the telling.
Why it matters beyond the three of us
It would be easy to read this as infrastructure politics — three institutions building plumbing. But the reason we’re doing it is the same reason behind everything else we build. A Japanese SME trying to sell to a global buyer is, today, quietly paying for a trust gap it didn’t create: the cost of documents and money living on separate tracks, reconciled by intermediaries, priced into every transaction whether the trade goes perfectly or not.
Close that gap — with the integrity of a tokenized document, the speed of bank-grade digital money, and the trust of a bank built for SMEs — and you don’t just make a transaction cheaper. You make a class of trade possible for businesses that the existing apparatus was never really designed to serve. That is the alliance worth forming, and it’s the one we’re committed to building.
If you’re a financial institution, a trade business, or an SME exporter who wants to understand what coordinated trade settlement could mean for you, let’s start the conversation.
