The bill of lading finally has a common language. It still can’t say ‘pay’.

The electronic bill of lading now has something it lacked for a decade: a shared vocabulary. On 25 September BIMCO published version 2.0 of its eBL Standard for bulk shipping, with 36 predefined data fields, up from the 20 it launched with in 2022. It is aligned with UN/CEFACT and described as “ISO 5909 ready”, referring to ISO 5909:2026, the international standard for eBL business processes and data published in January. The standard is free to any eBL provider, and BIMCO frames it as a fix for a long-standing obstacle: an eBL that could not move from one approved platform to another.

This is good news, and the people behind it deserve credit. Years of consensus work produced one answer to a question banks and shippers kept asking: which standard should we follow? But a common language for the document is not the same as a common instruction for the money. The eBL can now be described the same way everywhere. It still cannot tell anyone when to pay.

What a data standard settles.

A data standard decides what a bill of lading says and how a system should read it: shipper, consignee, notify party, ports, goods, the fields a carrier fills in and a bank looks for. With version 2.0, a bulk bill from one platform can be read by another without a translation project in between. That matters. According to the same BIMCO release, less than 2% of world trade still moves on electronic bills of lading, and part of the reason has been that every platform spoke its own dialect.

So the standard settles the noun. It makes the document legible and portable. That is a precondition for everything else, and it took a long time to get here.

What it does not settle.

Trade does not end when the document is legible. It ends when the seller is paid and the buyer holds the title, and ideally both happen at once. That moment is a verb: transfer, then release. Today the transfer is increasingly digital and standardised, while the release still sits in a different place, governed by a letter of credit, a collection instruction or an open-account promise, and executed on another rail by another party.

The result is a gap that a vocabulary cannot close. Two platforms can agree perfectly on what field 17 means, and the exporter can still ship first and wait. The document moved in seconds. The money moved when someone on the other side decided it should.

Standards for the handoff.

None of this is a criticism of BIMCO or ISO; describing the document was the right first job, and the scope is deliberate. It is a point about what comes next. If the industry now agrees on how a title is expressed and transferred, the next agreement worth making is what that transfer is allowed to trigger. Which events, verified by whom, release which amount to whom.

That is a narrower question than it sounds. In most trades, the payment logic does not need to read the whole bill. It needs two facts: did control of the title pass, and is the amount right. Everything else, the quality, the quantity, the terms, can be agreed and evidenced before shipment, so the release itself is a yes or no.

This is the layer we are building

We work at the point where title and money meet. Our Digital Safe holds the electronic trade document; Digitrad Payments carries the value; the transfer of one is the condition for the release of the other. The payment logic checks the amount and the title, and leaves every other condition to be agreed before the goods leave. Together with a tokenised-deposit platform and a bank, we are working on settling open-account trades in a bank-issued deposit token that waits for the electronic bill of lading. On the stablecoin side, our end-to-end run with BitTrade showed a cross-border payment received, converted and withdrawable as ordinary yen within the same business day.

A common eBL language makes our job easier, and we will build on it. What we would like to see next is the same patient, multi-party work applied to the handoff, so that a standard title transfer can mean a standard release of funds, whichever bank or platform sits on either side.

The litmus test

Ask your platform or your bank one question: when the bill of lading changes hands under the new standard, what happens to the money at that moment?

If the answer is “nothing yet”, the document learned a language and the trade is still waiting for someone to speak.
